Abstract

This thesis discusses the use of metaphors in several well-known Disney classic movie soundtracks from the 20th century. The purpose of this research is to identify the types and functions of metaphors that appear in the selected soundtracks. This research began by selecting 11 soundtracks from famous Disney classic movies in the 20th century as data sources. The focus of this research is to identify how metaphors in Disney classic movie soundtracks are used to strengthen the emotional, expressive, and aesthetic impact of song lyrics, making them more vivid and meaningful. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, where the researcher applied semantic metaphor analysis to understand the use of metaphors in selected Disney classic movie soundtracks. The theories used in this research are taken from Stephen Ullmann’s (2004) book entitled Semantics: An Introduction to the Science of Meaning, and Geoffrey Leech’s (1982) book entitled Style in Fiction: A Linguistic Introduction to English, which explained how to classify types and functions of metaphors to interpret the meaning of metaphorical expressions in Disney classic movie soundtracks. Through this process, the researcher found that Disney song lyrics contained various types of metaphors, with concrete to abstract (50%) and anthropomorphic (40%) being the most dominant. Meanwhile, in terms of function, the metaphors most frequently used to convey deep emotional meaning are the expressive function (63%) and the informative function (13%). Thus, it can be concluded that metaphors in Disney soundtracks function not only as stylistic elements, but also as important tools in the formation of narrative meaning.
