Abstract

This research focuses on the adaptation of a literary work phenomenon into a different medium, specifically into a film, which causes shifts and changes to the narrative aspects. This research aims to identify the narrative alterations between the novel "Turtles All the Way Down" (2017) by John Green and the 2024 film adaptation directed by Hannah Marks. This research employs descriptive and qualitative methods, conducting library research methodology to collect the data. By applying Linda Hutcheon's adaptation theory, this research aims to identify two key aspects: first, changes in the narrative aspects. Second, to find the impact of narrative changes on the original work. The findings of this research show that alterations occurred through scene selection, shifts in point of view, in chronology, in the central theme, and in the characterization. The alterations are shown in the way the main character’s stress intensity is depicted when struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), reducing the other characters’ roles in Aza’s journey, and simplifying Aza’s friendship and relationship.
