Abstract

This research examines how the author presents the narrative structure of the novel A Place for Us and the depiction of feminist issues in the novel. The theories used by researchers are narrative theory and feminist theory. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method with the main data source from the novel A Place for Us by Fatima Mirza. The results of this analysis are that the narrative five patterns proposed by Todorov were found in Mirza’s A Place for Us. By blending the five patterns with multi-voice storytelling, the conflicts and women’s experiences in A Place for Us are vivid and touching. I argue that what was experienced by several female characters in the novel occurred because of the rules and norms the Indian Muslim patriarchal culture they adhered to. Mirza depicts feminist messages through the female and male character's roles. Women can break patriarchal norms by having confidence and extensive knowledge.
