Abstract

This study discusses the politeness strategies used by Cinta Laura's Instagram followers when commenting on social media Instagram. This study aims to find politeness strategies and factors influencing followers’ comments. The politeness strategies theory used in this research is proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The data of this study are comments contained in Cinta Laura's Instagram upload on December 28, 2021. In collecting the data, the researcher took a random sample of 16 Cinta Laura Instagram comments for analysis. The data were analyzed by referring to the theory proposed by Brown and Levinson by connecting the context. In the positive politeness strategy, interest, and sympathy with the hearer is the most dominant strategy used by Cinta Laura's Instagram followers. The speaker is very interested in the listener and protects the listener's cheerful face. Factor in politeness strategies consists of payoff and relevant circumstances. The most dominant factor used by Cinta Laura's Instagram followers is a payoff. The speaker does not want to offend the listener's FTA, and the speaker avoids a negative impression on the listener.
