Abstract

This thesis is a study of the use of language in expressing racism in a literary work, especially the novel entitled The Song of Solomon, by Toni Morrison. This study aims to identify linguistic units such as lexicon, phrases, and sentences that contain elements of racism in the expressions of the main characters in the novel. Lexical meaning is determined by referring to Longman's dictionary and syntactic meaning refers to Leech's (1974) semantic theory and context of conversation. The content of the meaning of racism is also determined by referring to the theory of racism Clair and Denis (2015). Analysis of the data resulted in 16 words and 13 sentences containing expressions of racism. Racism is generally expressed by the main character to the interlocutor whose background is African-American.
