Abstract

The aim of the study is to find the relation between the need of affiliation and self disclosure on adolescents who use social media. The subjects of the research were 349 college and high school students in Padang who use social media. Researcher used non probability sampling technique with incidental sampling form to do the sampling. Researcher also used modified Revised Self Disclosure Scale (RSDS) by Wheeless (1976) and The Scale of Affiliation Need adapted from Interpersonal Orientation Scale (IOS) by Hill (1987) as measuring instruments. The modified scale of self disclosure has the reliability value of 0,86 and the scale of affiliation need has the reliability value of 0,89. Finally, researcher used Spearman Rank correlation analysis because the data gathered came out unevenly distributed. The result shows there is correlation between the need of affiliation and self disclosure on adolescents who use social media with the coefficient value of 0,160. The correlation is positive on both end and classified as weak. Key Words: Self Disclosure, The Need of Affiliation, Social Media, Adolescence
