Abstract
This study aims to determine the classification of the types of address terms (Wardaugh, 2006), and the function of using the address term from Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory when making requests for daily conversations by third year students majoring in English Literature at Andalas University. The research data used comes from previous research written by Putri Radhiatul Fajri (2020). A total of 45 third year English Literature students at Andalas University are willing to participate in this research. This study uses the Written DCT (Discourse Completion Test) as a data collection instrument, where participants are given 12 situations in written form related to the activities of a student. Every situation is designed based on different social factors. The address term is a word used to call someone to whom to speak. The results showed that there were nine types of address terms found in the study, namely name (54.7%), special nickname (5.5%), kinship (1.9%), Indonesian kinship (4.7%), Indonesian kinship. plus name (8.3%), title (16.9%), title plus name (1.1%), Indonesian title (4.1%), and Indonesian title plus name (2.5%). Then, three functions were found in using address terms, namely: give deference (15%), attention-gainer (83.6%), and soften the FTA (1.3%). From the twelve situations given, the third year students of English literature only use name when making requests to friends and titles to lecturers. This shows that some third year students still have not acquired the ability to use address terms properly.
