Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the language styles used by specific characters in the movie Five Feet Apart, with an emphasis on healthcare professionals. The study's goal is to identify the different language styles utilized and the social elements that influence them in the medical communication contexts depicted in the movie. The data was gathered from the movie's script, specifically from exchanges between nurses, nurses and patients, nurses and patients’ mothers, doctors and nurses, as well as doctors and patients. To collect relevant data, a descriptive qualitative method was adopted, followed by purposive sampling. The study employs Joos' (1967) theory of language style and Holmes' (2013) framework for social factors impacting language use. The data show that the movie has three of Joos' five language styles: consultative (54%), casual (32%), and intimate (14%). The Consultative Style is the most common, reflecting the semi-formal and instructive character of discussions in a hospital context. Four major social factors impacting language use were identified: participants (36%), setting (23%), topic (23%), and function (18%). These findings show that various social circumstances and communication responsibilities have a considerable impact on healthcare workers' choice of language style.
