Abstract

This thesis analyzes Henry David Thoreau’s novel entitled Walden. The aim of this research is to find the writer’s American Pastoral ideas in the novel through Thoreau’s experience while living in Walden pond using ecocrticical approach. The data is analyzed through qualitative method and the results is presented using descriptive method. The source of primary data is Walden and the sources of secondary data are books and journal articles related to the topic of the research. The research found that Walden by Henry David Thoreau provide the ideas about American Pastoral. It be represented through how he had harmony with nature, the awareness he had towards cycle of nature and how he valued nature after his experience in Walden Pond. It caused by the retreat of society, live in simplicity, critiques toward capitalist, and idealized the rural life that thoreau had in Walden Pond.
