Abstract
This thesis discusses about error analysis which determines the acquisition of the second language learner in acquire tag question. Tag question is a kind of question which has ‘tag' at the end of the sentence. The functions of it are to create confirmation and to convince people about something. The structure of the tag question is complex and should adjust to the sentence that is used. In case, not all people could produce it in daily life situation especially second language learners. The objective of this research is to see how far English Department Students 2017 in Andalas University know and understand tag question. Moreover, they can produce it unconsciously in certain situations. Discourse Completion Test (DCT) is used as the instrument of the research. Then, in analyzing the data the writer use the syntactial error to analyze the participants utterances especially in tag question production. From the data analysis, it is found that most of English Department Students 2017 in Andalas University as the second language learners had already known and been able to produce tag questions in certain situations, either Invariants or Variant. However, the main problem is that the tag questions within their utterances are incorrect. This is due to the lack of their understanding regarding the structure of the tag question itself, such as the understanding concept of the auxiliary, kinds of sentences (whether it is a nominal or verbal sentence) and subject-Verb Agreement in the sentence.
