Abstract

This research analyzes how the author presents narrative patterns and the significance of the narrative pattern in novel The Gimmicks. The writer used a close reading method that focuses on the theory of structuralism, particularly narrative pattern by Tzvetan Todorov's theory to analyze the novel. The results of this analysis show five narrative patterns proposed by Tzvetan Todorov, which consist of equilibrium, disruption, recognition, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium. Based on Todorov's narrative pattern, The Gimmicks has a non-linear narrative structure because the novel’s storyline overlaps between the past and the present. This study found that narrative patterns affect the storyline, particularly in terms of the characters' emotions and also what the characters experience. It demonstrates McCormick's use of a non-linear narrative structure, which produces a confusing yet meaningful historical order of events that reflects the characters' lives and internal problems. Each narrative explains and strengthens the characters' motivations and emotions. The study demonstrates how McCormick's non-linear narratives may effectively communicate the intertwined lives, challenges, and emotions of its characters.
