Abstract

The present study is a stylistic analysis focusing on the phonological and lexico-semantic levels in the song lyrics in the Buzz album by Niki Zefanya (NIKI). This study aims to identify phonological and lexico-semantic level features as stylistic devices used in lyrics and to describe the songwriter’s purposes behind their use. This study is analysed using a qualitative approach, and the results are presented descriptively. Based on the data analysis, the results show that at the phonological level, the three phonological devices, which are assonance (128 times) become the most dominant sound pattern, where the vocal sound /ɪ/ appears 79 times, followed by alliteration (101 times), with the consonant sound /f/ as the most frequently used, which is 36 times. Meanwhile, rhyme is divided into three types, including half-rhyme (30 times), reverse rhyme (7 times), and internal rhyme (2 times). At the lexico-semantic level, the most used trope is metaphor (49 times), followed by metonymy and paradox (12 times each), synecdoche (11 times), and irony (10 times). The choices NIKI makes as a songwriter in sound and meaning play an important role in shaping her distinctive characteristics, adding to the nuances, meanings, contexts, and themes in her song lyrics.
