Abstract

The main focus of this research is to analyze the types and functions of directive speech acts on each characters’ utterances in a movie called The Menu. A directive speech act is an utterance that is used by someone to ask someone else to perform a specific action. Directive speech acts are important aspects of communication because they are used to deliver intentions and goals. Directive speech acts have various types, such as commands, requests, and suggestions. Directive speech acts exist everywhere in society and frequently happen in everyday communication. Understanding how directive speech acts work can give insight into how language impacts other behaviors. There are two theories applied in identifying the types and functions of directive speech acts in this research. This research applied the theory by Kreidler (1998) to identify the types of directive speech acts. In identifying the functions of directive speech acts, this research applied the theory by Bach and Harnish (1979). This research used a table and chart, as well as narration text, to present the data descriptively. According to this research, there are 85 directive speech acts found in the movie entitled The Menu. The three types of directive speech acts (command, request, and suggestion) are found in this movie. The most dominant type of directive speech act in this movie is command, with a percentage of 48.23%. Furthermore, this research found there are 5 functions of directive speech acts in the movie in the form of requests, questions, requirements, prohibitives, and advisory. The most dominant function of directive speech acts used by the characters in the movie is requirements, with a percentage of 41.17%.
