Abstract

This thesis discusses code switching used by characters of Antologi Rasa novel written by Ika Natassa. The aim of this study is to find out types of code switching, functions, and social context that influence the occurrence of code switching. In collecting data, the writer applied purposive sampling and systematic random sampling. 22 data were analyzed by using the theory proposed by Gumperz (1982) about the types and functions of code switching and the theory proposed by Crystal (1987), supported by Ansori’s theory about the social factors that influence the code switching. The result of analysis shows that the type of code switching found in this novel is metaphorical. There is no situational code switching found. Moreover, the writer also found 5 functions of code switching: interjection which occurs once, reiteration which occurs once, message qualification which occurs 11 times, objectivization which occurs once, dan personalization which occurs 8 times. The social factors that influence the characters of this novel to switch code are social stratification and social solidarity. The characters of this novel come from middle class and have a close relationship. Keywords: code switching, types of code switching, function of code switching, social factors
