Abstract

Robert Lee Frost is one of the famous American poets who was admired for his realistic verse portraying ordinary people in everyday situations in his works, one of the literary element that can be found in his works is irony, he describes the irony as inner conflict where contradiction or contrast of narrator wish can be understand from reader’s perspective. Using Cleanth Brook’s irony focused on metaphors and symbolisms that appears in A Prayer in Spring, An Old Man’s Winter Night, Fire and Ice, Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening, and A Minor Bird. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The result of this analysis, it is found that only 1 or 2 types of irony found in each poems. All of the poems present different inner conflicts using irony. Additionally In four out of five poems analysed, “death” is frequently appear as a form of peace instead of eternal rest.
