Abstract

This study is intended to compare two works in different mediums: a novel titled A Study in Scarlet, authored by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, and its film adaptation, A Study in Pink, directed by Paul McGuigan in 2010. This study seeks to discover how cultural shift affects how Paul McGuigan depicted the smoking habit in his adaptation. This study employs the fidelity theory offered by James M. Welsh and the adaptation theory proposed by Linda Hutcheon. Qualitative analysis and library research are used as research methods in this study. The results revealed that McGuigan reduced and altered the depiction of smoking in his adaptation, but he still wanted to include elements of smoking to preserve its originality. He replaced the depiction of pipes and cigars with nicotine patches. The writer argues that cultural shifts were influential in making adaptations of the original novel A Study in Scarlet. The BBC's editorial guidelines and the UK's smoke-free law significantly influenced McGuigan's adaptation.
