Abstract

Joan Lindsay’s novel Picnic at Hanging Rock (1967) has been widely known in Australia. Australian gothic literature is primarily popular with the maximum exploration of the setting as the gothic style. This research focuses on analyzing the elements of gothic in Australian gothic novels to show the significance of the gothic setting in Australia. In analyzing this work, the writer applies genre theory, particularly the theory of gothic elements in setting by Robert Harris. Additionally, as part of the method of the study, the writer uses the qualitative method and library research. The analysis shows that the settings in Picnic at Hanging Rock strongly contain the elements of gothic fiction, and it is a dominant aspect carrying the story atmosphere of gothic. The two settings in the story, Appleyard College and the Hanging Rock grounds, completely embrace the gothic elements such as the setting in the horror place, the atmosphere of mystery, the supernatural incident, sentimental emotion, the omens, portents and visions, women in suffering, the use of gothic vocabulary, and hyperbolic phrases. All those elements show the significance of gothic in Australia is focusing on the setting, primarily Australian bush.
