Abstract

This research examines urban life as the setting in John Hersey’s masterpiece "Hiroshima". This research focuses on the study of urban life, which John Hersey uses as the setting for his novels. It also emphasizes the type of urban setting that exists in the story. Moreover, this research also looks at how well the settings work to convey the theme of the novel. In analyzing the novel, I use formalist approach to analyze the intrinsic element of the novel, especially the setting. I also apply qualitative methods and library research as research methods. In the end, I found that the setting of place is the most dominant setting that depicts urban life in Hiroshima compared to setting of time and social setting. Hiroshima as the main setting is massively influence in delivering the theme of the story. Keywords: Formalist approach, Hiroshima, setting, urban life. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini mengkaji kehidupan perkotaan sebagai setting dalam mahakarya John Hersey yang berjudul “Hiroshima”. Penelitian ini berfokus pada kajian kehidupan perkotaan yang digunakan John Hersey sebagai latar cerita. Penelitian ini juga menekankan jenis latar perkotaan yang ada dalam cerita. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga melihat seberapa baik setting bekerja untuk menyampaikan tema cerita yang ada di dalam novel. Dalam menganalisis novel Hiroshima, saya menggunakan pendekatan formalis untuk menganalisis unsur intrinsik yang terdapat di dalam novel, terutama setting. Saya juga menerapkan metode kualitatif dan penelitian kepustakaan sebagai metode penelitian. Pada akhirnya, saya menemukan bahwa setting tempat adalah setting yang paling dominan menggambarkan kehidupan perkotaan di Hiroshima dibandingkan dengan setting waktu dan setting sosial. Hiroshima sebagai latar utama sangat berpengaruh dalam penyampaian tema cerita. Kata kunci: Pendekatan formalis, Hiroshima, setting, kehidupan kota.
