Abstract

This research discusses the metaphorical figure of speech found in the Jakarta Post article related to Covid-19. The research data were limited to the Jakarta Post news headlines published in January to March 2021. This study aims to determine the types and meanings of metaphors contained in the article. The method used in obtaining the data is the non-participatory observational method. In analyzing the data, the author uses the theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (2003) to determine the types of metaphors and their meanings. The author found 23 articles related to Covid-19 in the Jakarta Post news article headline news. Then, the 23 articles were analyzed, only 12 articles contained metaphorical figures of speech and 11 articles did not contain metaphorical figures of speech. The results of this study indicate that there are 11 expressions that contain structural metaphors, 9 ontological metaphors, and 3 orientational metaphors. From these results, it can be concluded that there are 3 types of metaphors, in which the type of structural metaphor is the most common and the type of orientational metaphor is the least. Keywords: headline news, metaphor, ontological, orientational, structural, types and meanings
