Abstract

This study is about the use of code-switching that is found in the utterances of three famous Indonesian children vloggers in their videos uploaded on YouTube. The topic of the video is cooking. This study aims to find out the grammatical categories, the types of code-switching, and the probable reasons or causes of code-switching. The data was collected by downloading the videos, observing the occurrence of code-switching, and transcribing every utterance that contains English. The forms of English language used is analyzed by referring to Kolln and Funk’s (2012) theory, types of code-switching used are analyzed by referring to Poplack’s (1980) theory, and the probable reasons of code-switching are analyzed by referring to Hoffman's (1991) theory. The probable reasons for code-switching is also identified by referring to Suwito’s (1985). The result of data analysis shows that the grammatical categories of code-switching used by the children vloggers are mostly in the form of noun, which is 76 data. The type of code-switching that is used by the vloggers is primarily intra-sentential switching, which is 114 data (70,4%). There are seven probable reasons why the children vloggers switch code, but the main reason is the self-image construction, which is 100 data (61,8%). This is due to the fact that English is now a prestigious language.
