Abstract

ABSTRACT The study discusses impoliteness strategies used by a conservative activist, Candace Owen, in the committee hearing about hate crimes and white nationalism on April 09th, 2019. The purpose of this study is to know the type and factor of impoliteness used by Owen in her utterances. The data was obtained from Bjorn Ottosson's Youtube channel and C-SPAN.org. In analyzing the data, this study uses Culpeper theory (1996) in analyzing impoliteness strategies, the theory of factor proposed by Brown and Levinson ( 1987), and the theory of context proposed by Leech (1983). This study is categorized as descriptive because the data is presented in sentence form. The results of the study indicate that there are four kinds of impoliteness strategies used by Candace Owen, namely (a) bald on record (b) positive impoliteness (c) negative impoliteness (d) withhold. Meanwhile, (e) Sarcasm politeness was not found in this study. Positive impoliteness is the dominant strategy used by Candace Owen. This is because Candace Owen prefer to use inappropriate identity markers and disagreement strategy. There are two kinds of factor used by Candace Owen, namely social distance and relative power. Relative power is the dominant factor that used by Candace Owen. This is because Candace Owen prefer to attack the interlocutor’s face. The impoliteness strategies are used to express Candace Owen's feelings to the interlocutor. Keywords : Impoliteness Strategies, Factors, Youtube.
