Abstract

This research focus on the forms of silencing experienced by the main character, Tess Moreau, in Nicci French’s novel The Unheard. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method using Feminist Literary Criticism theory. The primary data for this study were collected from the novel The Unheard, while the secondary data were collected from several articles related to the research topic. This research reveals that Tess Moreau experiences silencing in both domestic and public spheres. The writer also links these forms of silencing to the theory of patriarchal binary thought proposed by Helene Cixous. The research focuses on the theory of binary language to describe the hierarchical structure between men and women, in which men occupy a superior position, while women are placed in an inferior one. Furthermore the research identifies various factors influencing silencing, such as phallocentrism, male authority, delegitimizing maternal roles through stigmatization, and gender oppression. In conclusion, the writer assume The Unheard portrays a woman who experiences silencing due to of a social environment that upholds a patriarchal system of domination.
