Abstract
This study discusses the struggle of a black slave named Cora who grew up on the Randall plantation who chose to escape to seek freedom to other northern states after experiencing cruel torture and also losing her mother, Mabel. The story experienced by this female slave is found in the novel The Underground Railroad written by Colson Whitehead. To analyze this study, the method used is Psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud. This study uses a qualitative method and the results are presented in descriptive form. I argue that Cora and other characters in this novel experience several forms of violence, both physical and sexual, which will cause Cora and other characters to experience trauma such as suppressing bad memories (repression), diverting emotions (refuge), and freezing due to fear (freezing). Cora's struggle to recover is marked by the beginning of her journey to the South. However, until the end of the novel, Cora continues to search for the true meaning of freedom and security. Through this novel written by Colson Whitehead, it not only presents violence, but also Cora's struggle to find a more decent and safe life.
