Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of directive utterances found in radiotelephony communication between Air Traffic Controllers (ATACs) and pilots at Minangkabau International Airport. This research employed a qualitative method following the approach proposed by John W. Creswell. The data source consisted of recorded conversations between ATCs and pilots at Minangkabau International Airport. The data of this study were directive utterances obtained from five conversations involving different situations, conditions, and airlines. The analysis was conducted using Charles W. Kreidler’s theory of directive utterances, which classifies directives into three types: commands, requests, and advice. The findings revealed that 13directive utterances were identified in the data. Among them, 10 utterances were classified as commands and 3 utterances as requests, while no advice utterances were found. The dominance of commands and the presence of requests indicate that radiotelephony communication primarily relies on directive utterances to facilitate the delivery of operational instructions and information between ATCs and pilots. These findings suggest that clear and direct communication plays an important role in supporting effective radiotelephony interactions during flight operations.
