Abstract

Positive politeness strategies used by Gabriel Iglesias in his stand-up comedy show, Stadium Fluffy, are discussed in this study. The aim of the study is to identify the types of positive politeness strategies used in the performance and to examine the most frequently used strategy in the humor delivered by the comedian. The theories used in the study are Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987), focusing on fifteen strategies of positive politeness, and theory of incongruity-resolution humor proposed by Attardo (2020) to determine the humor delivered by Gabriel in his performance. A qualitative descriptive method was used in the study. 60 data were found in the show with its duration 1 hour and 55 minutes. The most dominant strategies are the combination of strategy 3: Intensify interest to hearer and Strategy 8: Joke, which appeared twenty times or 33% of the total data. These strategies are used to build audience interest and engagement with the speaker's narrative while maintaining a smooth interaction, thereby mitigating the risk of offending listeners, even though the narrative is delivered humorously.
