Abstract

This study aimed to identify the language styles and social factors that were utilized by the main character in The Girl in the Basement movie (2021) directed by Elisabeth Rohm. In this study, the researcher uses a qualitative method in which the data were collected by watching the movie and examining the conversations. Language styles were analyzed using the theories of Martin Joos (1967), while the social factors that affected the language style were defined by using the theory of Holmes (2013). There are forty-one (41) data excerpts from the conversations that were analyzed to demonstrate the language styles. The findings revealed that the dominant style used was casual style with 25 cases (60,97%), next followed by formal style with 0 cases, consultative style is 6 cases (14,28%), intimate style is 10 cases (24,49%), and frozen style is 0 cases (0%). So, the findings implied that the prevalence of casual style illustrated the nature of social relationships and contexts among the characters. Then, in the movie, the social factors that the researcher found, such as social status, family relationships, and intimacy, strongly shaped the choice of language styles in their communication.
