Abstract

This research explores the fulfillment of the hierarchy of needs of the main characters in Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover. The novel talks about two characters, Miles and Tate, who have internal issues that unconsciously prevent them from developing and achieving self-actualization. This research uses a qualitative method and applies psychological literary theory to analyze how characters are depicted and how their journeys fulfill human needs. The central theme of the novel is love. This study draws on Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory, which categorizes five levels of basic human needs, they are physiological, safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The purpose of this research is to analyze the representation of the two main characters in relation to fulfilling each stage of the hierarchy of human needs, and the effects of the unfulfilled needs. The research found that both characters have fulfilled their physiological needs, including food, minerals, and sleep. For the second stage of needs, Miles physically fulfilled the safety needs, and Tate fulfilled her safety needs through the mental security provided by her family. The core conflict of the analysis is the love and belonging needs, which both characters struggle to achieve, affecting their emotions and psychology, and creating obstacles to the subsequent stages of basic needs, namely esteem needs and self-actualization.
