Abstract

This study examines dual perspectives and nostalgia in Wendelin Van Draanen’s novel Flipped (2001) and its movie adaptation (2010) by Rob Reiner with the same title. Employing Linda Hutcheon’s adaptation theory, John Gibbs’ mise-en-scène approach, and Svetlana Boym’s concept of nostalgia. This research aims to explore how narrative and cinematic representations in both works depict the dual perspectives of the main characters and nostalgia. The analysis focuses on how narrative and visual elements portray shifts in emotion, perception, and memory among characters, as well as how the movie adaptation preserves or transforms the novel’s essence. This study uses descriptive qualitative research and discovered two findings. First, it reveals that the dual perspectives in both media convey the same contrasting perspectives of the two characters. However, in the movie adaptation, some perceptions are underemphasized, and the characters’ turning point is accelerated due to time limitations in the new medium. Also, the novel conveys the nostalgia of the two characters as a representation of reflective nostalgia, while the movie is restorative nostalgia since it reconstructs the past, in the 1950s and 1960s.
