Abstract
This study analyzes the psychological resonance between the main character, Hazel Grace Lancaster, and the fictional novel An Imperial Affliction in John Green's The Fault in Our Stars. This research applies psychoanalytic criticism by using Sigmund Freud's theory of the id, ego, and superego, Schultz and Schultz's defense mechanism, and Norman Holland's identity theme theory. Hazel's resonance with An Imperial Affliction reveals her unconscious psychological processes relating to illness, death, and social relationships. Hazel strongly identifies with the novel's protagonist, Anna, reflecting her fears, guilt, and desire for meaning in her short life. The novel serves as a psychological mirror and emotional sanctuary for Hazel, shaping her attitudes, behaviors, and use of defense mechanisms such as suppression, repression, intellectualization, and rationalization. Through this analysis, this study highlights how literature not only reflects but also influences the psyche and behavioral patterns of readers. It emphasizes the critical role of literature in helping individuals overcome trauma, isolation, and the search for meaning under life's limitations.
