Abstract

This thesis discusses the Marxist interpretation of the novel, revealing that class struggle issues influence the personal relationships of the main characters and provide a depiction of social and economic status as a reflection of American society in the 1940s, emphasizing the impact of class division on the lives and relationships of individuals based on the story in Nicholas Sparks' The Notebook. This thesis centers on Karl Marx's philosophical theory of Marxism and Fredric Jameson's theory of Social Class Struggle, which seeks to evaluate class inequality in the romantic relationship between the two characters (Noah and Allie). Through his analysis, it is clear that the different social backgrounds of the characters (Allie as an upper-class individual and Noah as a working-class background) pose significant challenges that hinder their relationship. Although they deeply love each other, they are separated by society, which forces them to live apart due to prejudiced views about class differences. The phenomenon at the center of this study is that the roots of class structure have weakened individual agency and emotional satisfaction in romantic relationships.
