Abstract

This study discusses a novel written by American author Kathryn Stockett entitled The Help. This study aims to analyse the stages of the hero's journey experienced by one of the characters in this novel, Skeeter, and determine the transformation of Skeeter's character as she goes through her journey. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods, presents the writer’s arguments and ideas on resolving issues related to Skeeter's hero's journey. The data are taken from the novel The Help and combines with sources related to the research topic. The research questions are answers using Joseph Campbell's theory of the Hero's Journey. From this research, the writer concludes that Skeeter goes through nine stages. These nine stages include: The Call to Adventure, Supernatural Aid, The Crossing of the First Threshold, Belly of the Whale, The Road of Trials, Atonement with Father, Apotheosis, The Ultimate Boon, and Refusal of the Return. In addition, this study also shows that Skeeter undergoes a significant transformation from a young woman who conforms to the social expectations of her racially segregated community to someone who challenges racial injustice by giving voice to the experiences of black domestic workers. These three main stages form a crucial transformation for Skeeter. She willingly leaves her old life behind for a heroic journey, maintains her commitment until the end, and succeeds in bringing about change for herself while becoming a voice for the segregated society.
