Abstract
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer whose primary management involves chemotherapy. Chemotherapy, however, is associated with various side effects, one of which is oral mucositis. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce mucositis has not been fully effective, thus requiring collaborative non-pharmacological interventions, such as cryotherapy. This paper aims to describe the nursing care provided to a patient with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia through the administration of ice cubes to manage chemotherapy-induced mucositis in the Chronic Pediatric Ward of Dr. M. Djamil Central General Hospital, Padang. The method used was a case study with a nursing process approach applied to one pediatric patient with ALL who developed mucositis due to chemotherapy. The established nursing diagnoses were impaired tissue integrity, hyperthermia and risk of bleeding. Management of tissue integrity impairment began with mucositis assessment using the Oral Assessment Guide (OAG).The patient was then given ice cubes 5 minutes before chemotherapy started, continued during chemotherapy, and for 5 minutes after chemotherapy ended.. This intervention was carried out three times over the course of one week. The evaluation showed a decrease in the OAG score from 16 to 9. This study indicates that cryotherapy can help manage chemotherapy-induced mucositis. It is recommended that healthcare professionals consider incorporating cryotherapy as a non-pharmacological intervention in managing mucositis in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
