Abstract

There are differences in language use between men and women. This difference has been researched and has led to theories; one of these theories is about the characteristics of female language. The linguist who developed this theory is Robin Lakoff. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of female language according to Lakoff (1975) and use Holmes (2013) theory to analyze the function of the characteristics of female language found on the Instagram account of female memes @girlyzar. @girlyzar is an account that shares posts of English-language female memes along with English-language comments. The analysis results are presented descriptively, along with tables. From the analysis results of this study, from 133 females comments it was found that there were 30 utterances divided into six types: 1) lexical hedges or fillers, (2) intensifiers, (3) hypercorrect grammar, (4) superpolite forms, (5) avoidance of strong swear words, and (6) emphatic stress. The research results show that the features of Women's Language most frequently used by women when commenting are intensifier, which occurs 9 times (7.96%). Interestingly, there were no occurrences of tag questions, empty adjectives, precise color terms, and rising intonation (0.0%). Additionally, two functions of female language features were identified as being used by women when commenting on the Instagram page girlyzar, namely hedging devices 15 times and boosting devices 15 times (both 13.27%). From the findings on types of women’s language features, it was found that hedging devices and boosting devices were used in equal numbers. Each was used in these analyzed cases, showing a balanced tendency between softening statements and emphasizing them in female commenters' utterances.
