Abstract

Film as a medium of popular culture not only functions as a medium of entertainment, but also as a space to present social values and ideologies. The Marvels movie, which is the latest work of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), presents a representation of multiculturalism through main characters with different backgrounds. This research aims to find out the form of multiculturalism representation in The Marvels film through the analysis of denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings, as well as critically analyze the meaning and ideology behind multiculturalism in The Marvels film. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. Data collection was carried out by conducting observations, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. Data analysis was carried out by applying Roland Barthes semiotics which focuses on three levels of meaning, namely denotative, connotative, and myth. The results show that there are strong multiculturalism values in this movie, namely: (1) ethnic diversity; (2) multilingual communication; (3) religious diversity and spirituality. This finding shows that The Marvels movie does not only present superhero action, but also shows that there are ideological values regarding diversity between cultures. The representation of multiculturalism in The Marvels film has a positive impact on the global public sphere because it is shown in the mainstream, and challenges the dominance of a single narrative in the medium of popular culture.
