Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the ideational function of two speeches delivered by President Joko Widodo regarding Crude Palm Oil (CPO) policies. This research employs a descriptive research design with a qualitative approach. The data were obtained from transcripts of the speeches above, which are available on the State Secretariat website (https://www.setneg.go.id). Both speeches address CPO export policies. The analysis used systemic functional linguistics methodologies, focusing on the ideational metafunction, encompassing experiential and logical meanings. The findings indicate that both speeches have similarities in their emphasis on experiential meaning. Speech A mostly uses mental process in experiential meaning, and Speech B shows a similar pattern on mental process. A notable difference was observed in the use of participants (senser): Speech A employs the pronoun pemerintah (government), whereas Speech B uses saya (I). The employment of saya in Speech B indicates the President as a person who directly engages with the audience, whereas the use of pemerintah in Speech A suggests an institutional representation of authority. These linguistics choices can be interpreted as a unique and strategic selection of vocabulary, highlighting an awareness of the potential implications of word choice in public communication.
