Abstract

This thesis explores the integration of Hindu mythology into modern literature through an analysis of Roshani Chokshi’s Aru Shah and the End of Time. The focus of this research is to find out what mythological references are in the novel, the significance of mythological archetypes in character development and plot progression, and how Chokshi reinterprets these elements for contemporary audiences. The researcher utilizes Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey as a theoretical framework, which outlines a universal narrative pattern commonly found in myths and storytelling. This framework consists of stages such as the Call to Adventure, Trials and Challenges, and the Ultimate Transformation, which help analyze the protagonist’s journey and character development in the novel. The analysis method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method, using Aru Shah and the End of Time as the primary source of data and any other applicable secondary data to support the analysis. The analysis shows that Chokshi’s work is rich in Hindu mythology and demonstrates the continued relevance of mythology in shaping cultural identity, moral values, and literary innovation in an ever-evolving global landscape. Her reinterpretation is also relatable to modern readers, particularly younger audiences.
