Abstract

This thesis examines the use of tense, aspect, modality, and voice that dominate verb phrases in five articles from Harper’s Bazaar regarding the 2023 Met Gala. The aim of this thesis is to analyze which types of tense, aspect, modality, and voice are most frequently used by the writers and to interpret these findings in relation to the writers' purpose in communicating with the readers. Data collection was carried out by reading the articles, noting the verb phrases, and categorizing them based on the type of tense, aspect, modality, and voice used. In this analysis, theories proposed by Berk (1999) is applied to analyze tense and voice, theory proposed by Comrie (1976) is used for aspect, and theory proposed by Palmer (1990) is used for modality. Out of 135 data points, two types of tense were found: present tense and past tense, with past tense being the most dominant. For aspect, among the three types analyzed, simple, progressive, and perfective, simple aspect was the most frequently used. Modality was categorized into epistemic and deontic, with epistemic modality being more commonly found, although most data did not use modality at all. Voice was categorized into active and passive, with active voice being the most dominant. Past tense was used more frequently to convey information about events that had already occurred, such as the 2023 Met Gala. The dominance of simple aspect reflects a clear and direct presentation of information without unnecessary details. The low use of modality suggests a focus on presenting certain facts, while epistemic modality was employed to express possibilities. Active voice was predominant to ensure the information was delivered in a more direct and easily understandable way for readers.
