Abstract
Malnutrition is a condition in which there is an imbalance in individual nutritional intake caused by insufficient or excessive consumption of nutrients that can have a significant impact on the hypothalamic-pituitary organ axis and disrupt the concentration of Growth Hormone (GH) and Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1). Malnutrition also results in chronic inflammatory conditions and is estimated to cause around 60% of growth inhibition in children. This study aims to determine the effect of lima bean supplementation on GH and IGF-1 expression and to identify bioactive compounds from lima beans that have anti-inflammatory activity. This study was conducted using an experimental method using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Using four treatments and six replications, namely normal mice without treatment (P0), malnourished mice (P1), malnourished mice treated with 25% lima bean flour (P2), malnourished mice treated with 50% lima bean flour (P3). LC-MS/MS analysis was used to identify bioactive compounds found in lima beans. Lima bean flour supplementation can increase the expression of GH and IGF-1 genes, increase the number of somatotroph cells, increase GH levels in blood plasma and have anti-inflammatory activity and interact well with IL-6, IL-1B, and TNF-a target proteins based on molecular docking studies.
