Abstract

This thesis discusses the imageries in exploring the world as found in the novel Room by Emma Donoghue. She uses imagery in reaching Jack’s understanding to compare the imaginative world and the real world. Firstly, I apply new criticism theory by Cleanth Brooks that is stressed in finding the meaning in the text through the novel. Secondly, I apply A. H. Abrams’s theory of imageries that separates the concept of imagery in two concepts: simile and metaphor. I find several similes (cyborg, bird, rat on a wheel, etc) and metaphors (Alice in Wonderland, Mermaid story, blue, etc) in the novel that shows understanding world outside that is conducted by Ma. After analyzing similes and metaphors, I conclude that imagery can help children to imagine the real situation to their imaginative situation.
