Abstract

This research analyzes the exploitation of workers in The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and Kani Kosen Sebuah Revolusi by Kobayashi Takiji. The focus of this research is the trigger, impact and acts of exploitation that occur to workers in both novels and their comparison. This research also explains the connection between the two novels and the social reality of workers in America and Japan in the 20th century. The method used is qualitative method, applying the theory of Class Struggle and Exploitation by Karl Marx. The author also uses a mimetic approach. The results of the research show that The Jungle and Kani Kosen Sebuah Revolusi indeed depict the social reality of workers in America and Japan in the early 20th century where workers were exploited and fought back by going on strike. The results also show that the exploitation in Kani Kosen Sebuah Revolusi is more violent than in The Jungle. Both novels also show that the poor relationship between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat allows exploitation to flourish in the workplace and the bourgeoisie plays a major role in this. Both novels feature exploitative behaviors towards workers that include excessive working hours, bad working and bad living conditions, and agent fraud. The impact of exploitation is also dire as it results in physical and mental damage to workers, as well as strikes. The differences found are the issue of wages, where the workers live and the outcome of the workers' resistance.
