Abstract

This research focuses on the word formation process of slang in 26 Olivia Rodrigo’s song lyrics. This study took 26 song lyrics by Olivia Rodrigo, namely 12 songs from the "GUTS" album, 11 songs from the "SOUR" album, and three singles released in 2024 ("So American," "Obsessed," and "Stranger"). The aims of the study are to explain the process of word formation in slang, and to find the frequency of occurrence of word formation of slang in Olivia Rodrigo’s song lyrics. The data were analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative method to explain the data descriptively, based on Yule’s theory (2010) as grand theory. In this study, the technique of tree diagram is applied to provide an overview describing the word formation process in compounding and derivation. The result of this study reveals that there are 14 slangs that are formed through word formation processes. They can be categorized into five types of word formation processes: coinage (7.14%), compounding (28.57%), conversion (14.28%), derivation (28.57%), and multiple processes (21.43%). The balanced frequency compounding and derivation (28.57%) indicate that both of process are highly productive ways to creates new words, especially slang in Olivia Rodrigo’s song lyrics.
