Abstract

ABSTRACT Name : Permata Jali Dimasiosz Study Program: Master's Program in Sociology Title : Conflict Resolution Mechanisms at Pasar Raya Padang In the market, conflict over space is part of social market situation. Actors involved in conflict can use violent and non-violent actions to achieve their interests in obtaining space. So far, there has been little research done on this topic. This paper discusses actor conflict resolution strategies and why they choose those actions. The research question is: (1) What conflict resolution mechanisms are used to resolve spatial conflicts in Padang Market? (2) Why do actors choose certain conflict resolution mechanisms? To answer these questions, two cases were analyzed in this study; first, a case involving a group of fish traders against a group of vegetable traders and bemo drivers, and second, a case related to the policy management of street vendors issued by the city government in 2014 and 2018. Based on rational choice theory and forum shopping, the results show that parties involved in conflict utilize various conflict resolution forums starting with internal ones up to external conflict resolution forums. External forums are chosen because market internal forums prove ineffective. Results indicate that availability of effective conflict resolution mechanisms, both internally and externally contribute towards market trade security. Markets are considered safe when violent acts start to decline, and actors shift towards using conflict resolution forums to address their disputes.
