Abstract

This study examines the thematic progressions in paragraphs written by EFL students. This study aims to find out the types and dominant type of thematic progression in paragraphs written by the EFL students. The study uses a qualitative approach. The data were collected using a convenience sampling by selecting 24 paragraphs of final exam results from class D Elementary Reading and Writing which are written by first-year students’ class of 2021 at the English Department at Andalas University. The data were analyzed using Halliday and Matthiessen's (2014) theory to determine Theme and Rheme, and Eggins (2004) theory to determine thematic progression in the paragraphs. The findings show that all students' paragraphs use more than one pattern meaning that they tend to combine the Reiteration Theme Patterns, Zigzag Theme Patterns, and Multiple Rheme Patterns. Furthermore, this study found that the multiple Rheme pattern was the most frequently used thematic pattern (13 times) paragraphs, zigzag Theme pattern (6 times) came second, and reiteration Theme pattern (5 times) came third. The analysis in this study shows that there were several sentences in paragraphs not related to each other. This shows that EFL students tend to write information without thorough preparation, because they do not pay attention to the relationship between the theme and the information provided by the previous sentence.
