Abstract
The struggles of black women are deeply intertwined with issues of racism, discrimination, gender inequality, and various domestic challenges. This thesis delves into the multifaceted struggles encountered by black women, as depicted in the literary works The Pain Tree by Olive Senior, Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston, and the reflection in Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. Employing a sociological approach and drawing upon black feminist theory, this research examines the interconnected dynamics of race, gender, and social class that contribute to the arduous experiences of black women. Through a thorough analysis of the characters' narratives, social contexts, and the impact of structural inequalities, this study exposes the pervasive nature of discrimination, racism, oppression, betrayal, and gender inequality faced by black women. Moreover, this research highlights the remarkable resilience of these women as they confront and resist these obstacles, showcasing their agency within oppressive systems. The primary objective of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the struggles and liberation of black women, while underlining the pressing need to address and dismantle the social structures perpetuating this injustice. By shedding light on these issues, this research aims to contribute to ongoing discussions surrounding social justice and to inspire action towards creating a more equitable society for all.
