Abstract

This research aims to know the category and strategy of the speech act of complaint in the main character of Don’t Look Up movie. The data is collected using the observational method with non-participants by Sudaryanto (1993). The data were analyzed using the theory proposed by Trosborg (1995). The result of the data analysis in this study is presented descriptively. Based on this research, 36 speech act of complaint is used by the main character in Don’t Look Up movie. The main character of Don’t Look Up movie uses four categories of the speech act of complaint; they are no explicit reproach (13,89%), disapproval (33,33%), accusations (16,67%), and blame (36,11%). The dominant category used by the main character of Don’t Look Up movie is blame as many as 13 times (36,11%). The main character of Don’t Look Up movie tends to express their complaint directly an openly attack the listener. The most dominant strategy used by the main character of Don’t Look Up movie is explicit blame (person) as many as 8 times (22,22%). In addition, the speaker is inclined to state implicitly that the listener is a non-responsible social member.
