Abstract
This study is about the use of filler by the students of the English department in their thesis proposal presentation. The aim of this study is to investigate the forms and functions of the filler that are identified in the students’ speeches. The data were obtained from ten students of the 2017 English students majoring in linguistics. The type of fillers is determined by referring to Roses’ (1998) theory of filler and the function is determined by referring to Stenstroms’ (1994) theory of functions of filler. The result of the analysis shows that the two types of Roses’ types of filler forms, Unlexicalized Filled Pause (UFP) and Lexicalized Filled Pause (LFP), are found in the students’ speech. The forms of UFP are ah, eh, um, er, and uh, while the forms of LFP are so, well, I think, I mean, and okay. Then, the functions of filler are a mark of hesitation, timecreating device, mitigating and editing terms.
