Abstract

In this study, the writer discusses the structural forms of request and request strategies used by the students to the lecturers at WhatsApp. The data from this study are request utterances conveyed by students to lecturers via WhatsApp. The sources of data for this research are the students of English Department at Andalas University year 2018. This research aims to find the structural forms of request and identify the request strategy conveyed by the students to the lecturers via WhatsApp. The researcher used Yule's (1996) theory to find the structural forms of request. Trosborg's (1995) theory is used by the researcher to identify request strategies. In collecting data, the researcher used non-participant observation. In this study, there were 23 conversations from 10 students of English Department at Andalas University year 2018. From the 23 data, the writer found 14 conversations using interrogative forms, 4 conversations using declarative forms, and 6 conversations using imperative forms. The interrogative form is the most used by the students because interrogative form refers the politeness. Afterward, in the request strategies, the writer found 6 strategies used from 12 strategies including strong hint, ability, willingness, permission, unhedged performative, and wish. Then, from the 6 strategies, willingness strategy and wish strategy are the most used by the students. It is because the lecturers have a higher position than the students, so to show politeness in making a request, the students ask about the lecturer’s willingness first. Then, in making a request, the students also wish that the lecturer will do and allow their request.
