Abstract
The number of street children in Padang City is increasing every year. The lives of street children in Padang City are also very worrying, far from normal life patterns and tends to be inconsistent with the norms that apply in social life. This study aimed to determine how the interpersonal communication of social workers and street children at the Kasih Ibu LPKS which is under the auspices of the Dinas Sosial Kota Padang using the social penetration theory by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor which stated that social penetration theory discusses how the development of closeness in a relationship, where self-disclosure or disclosure of personal matters is the main route for deeper social penetration. This study used qualitative research methods. The paradigm used in this research is constructivism. Data collection were done by observing coaching activities and interviewing social workers. The results of this study indicated that the communication process, especially interpersonal communication, is a very important process in establishing a relationship between social workers and street children. in the process, interpersonal communication is carried out through four stages according to the theory of social penetration, starting from the orientation stage, the affective exploration exchange stage, the affective exchange stage to the stable exchange stage. Where If the four stages can run well then the obstacles can be minimized so that the relationship between social workers and street children can be established and the coaching process can be realized.
