Abstract

The study of women’s language features used by women characters in Pride and Prejudice movie in requests is discussed in this research. This research aims to find out the women’s language features used by women characters in Pride and Prejudice movie in request and the functions of its features. Data were collected by using the observational method with non-participant by Sudaryanto (1993). Data were analyzed by reffering to the theory of women’s language features proposed by Lakoff (1975) and the theory of the functions of women’s language features proposed by Holmes (2013). The results of the analysis are presented descriptively. Women characters in Pride and Prejudice movie use eight types of women’s language features in request, they are: (1). lexical hedges or fillers (17,54%), (2) tag questions (7,01%), (3) ‘empty’ adjectives (2,63%), (4) intensifiers (14,03%), (5) ‘hypercorrect’ grammar (22,80%), (6) ‘superpolite’ forms (18,42%), (7) avoidance of strong swear words (3,50%), and (8) emphatic stress (14,03%). Research shows the dominant type of women’s language feature used by women characters in Pride and Prejudice movie in requests is ‘hypercorrect’ grammar as much as 24 times (22,80%). They tend to strengthen their request statements to make people pay attention, yet it still polite to hear. Furthermore, two functions of women’s language features were used by women characters in Pride and Prejudice movie in request are hedging devices (46,49%) and boosting devices (53,50%). The most dominant functions used is boosting devices as much as 61 times (53,50%). In conclusion, in Pride and Prejudice movie, the women characters want to emphasize their request using boosting devices.
