Abstract

This research focuses on voicing contrast made by the third graders at the State Senior High School 1 Pasaman. This research aims to analyse the way how the students produce the voicing contrasts and identify the cause of error. To analyze the data, the writer chose minimal pair words consisting of English consonant and vowel sounds. The writer used Convenience Sampling method where the subject of research consisted of 10 participants. In analysing data some theory were used: Susan & Gas (1994) Second Language Acquisition, Katamba (1998) Phonology, Selinker (2008) Interlanguage Phonology and Contrastive Analysis, Harlig and Sprouse (2008) Language Transfer, Krashen (2009) Hypotheses about second language acquisition, Eckman (1993) Markedness Theory, Ellis (2008) Error analysis. In analyzing the data, the researcher used software Praat for accuracy of the data. Based on the analysis, it was shown that Male participant tend to commit more errors than Female participants. The error is due to three factors and two types of error. The factors namely Intralingual error, interference error, and development errorwhereas the types of error namely misinformation error and omissionerror
